Course Descriptions

The mission of the Bangor Area School District Community in the area of Family and Consumer Sciences Education empowers students, as individuals and within families, to manage the challenges of living and working in an ever-changing, diverse, global society.

 

Introduction to Foods and Nutrition (9, 10, 11) Quarter Course

This quarter course is a prerequisite for Culinary Arts and World of Foods. This course will emphasize basic nutrition information, food preparation skills, and making healthy food choices through hands-on experience.

 

Introduction to Child Development (9, 10, 11) Quarter Course

This quarter course is a prerequisite for Exploring Childhood - The Early Years. Students will be introduced to the world of children through understanding their growth, development, play and guidance. Determining caregiver readiness and responsibilities is also covered. One course activity involves participation in "parenting" an infant simulator.

 

Family and Consumer Science in Your Life (9, 10) Semester Course

This semester course will emphasize concepts that students may need and use in real world situations involving food and nutrition and child development. The foods and nutrition area will focus on healthy eating with hands on food preparation experiences. In the child development area, students will explore how children grow and develop with appropriate play and guidance techniques applied. Students will also work to develop skills in the areas of relationships and consumer management.

 

Food Science (9, 10, 11, 12) Quarter Course

As students progress through this quarter course, they will use the scientific method to study the biological and chemical basis of nutrition and food preparation. Students develop laboratory, writing, and critical reasoning skills through measuring, recording, and graphing data, and predicting and evaluating laboratory results. Areas of study include energy/microwaves, nutrients, metabolism, enzymes, emulsions, leavening agents, dehydration, food safety, and additives, with most topics including food preparation.

 

Healthy Living and Cooking (9, 10,11, 12) Quarter course

The goal of this class will be to allow students to gain hands-on experience in the preparation of healthy foods and making wise eating choices that can easily be incorporated into their own family's eating habits. It will also cover the topics of nutrition, fitness and a healthy lifestyle.

 

Culinary Arts (10, 11, 12) Semester Course

This semester course develops the creative skills while learning to plan, prepare, and serve well balanced meals. Students will study the relationship of food to fitness and well-being, prepare a variety of dishes, and complete the course by planning and preparing a complete meal. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Foods and Nutrition.)

 

World of Foods (10, 11, 12) Semester Course

Exploring the wonderful world of food, students in this semester course learn what foods are popular in other countries and how to prepare those foods. They also practice new skills in the art of entertaining. Hands-on laboratory experiences and testing supplement theory. The World of Food highlights advanced cooking techniques, and skills learned in this course will be used to plan and present a theme party such as a Hawaiian Luau, a Tex-Mex gathering, or an All-American Picnic. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Foods and Nutrition and Culinary Arts)

 

Clothing Design & Creative Crafts I (9, 10, 11, 12) Semester Course

Clothing Design & Creative Crafts I will assist students in developing the skills needed to pursue further education in the fashion design area. This semester course will cover the basic elements of clothing construction design, as well as quilting and cross-stitch skills. Students will construct several clothing, cross-stitch and quilting projects. Students will be responsible for the costs of projects made in class.

 

Clothing Design & Creative Crafts II (9, 10, 11, 12) Semester Course

This semester course will further enhance and develop the skills taught in Clothing Design & Creative Crafts I. Students will construct clothing and other projects using more advanced techniques. They will also construct an article of clothing from a design they've created. A design portfolio will also be completed. Students will be responsible for the costs of projects completed in class. (Prerequisite: Clothing Design and Creative Crafts I)

 

Clothing Design & Creative Crafts III (11,12) Semester Course

Clothing Design & Creative Crafts III is designed for the student that has completed Clothing Design & Creative Crafts I & II. The more serious clothing student will have the opportunity to refine and develop new skills in this area. Students will complete a tailored project and projects that include skills that they have not yet mastered. The course will also address portfolio requirements from several college design programs. Students are responsible for the cost of projects completed in class. (Prerequisite: Clothing Design & Creative Crafts I & II)

 

Interior Design (10, 11, 12) Semester Course

Students in this semester course will focus on design principles and techniques used to decorate a home. Furniture styles and periods, arrangements, color, lighting, and floor plans are highlighted. Students will develop a personal portfolio of design plans and ideas for possible future careers.

 

Exploring Childhood - The Early Years (11, 12) Semester Course

This semester course emphasizes the readiness to parent, health and wellness in the prenatal period, and infant and toddler growth and development. Included in this course are field trips, guest speakers, and various hands-on activities, including "parenting" an infant simulator. Students interested in careers such as nursing, early childhood education, day care provider, psychology, pediatrics, or elementary education would benefit from this course. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Child Development)

 

Exploring Childhood - The Preschool Years and Beyond (11, 12) Semester Course

This semester course deals with all phases of child development ranging from age three to age eight. In addition to classroom work and experiences, students will be involved in administering and operating a play school comprised of three to five year olds. Juniors and seniors considering a career working with young people, desiring to become good parents sometime in the future, and/or enjoying working with children will find this course to be a valuable experience. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Child Development and Exploring Childhood - The Early Years)

 

Dimensions of Adult Life (11, 12) Semester Course

How well do you know yourself and your future goals? This semester course takes you on a journey from understanding yourself and establishing relationships with others to understanding your future as a married partner or single adult. Current issues such as dating behaviors, domestic violence, positive parenting, career development, AIDS, and financial planning are addressed through class discussion, speaker visitation, and media presentation.
